Balto, a Siberian Husky became popular for his heroic role in the 1925 serum run to Nome, Alaska. During the deadly diphtheria outbreak in Alaska, life-saving antitoxin needed to be transported over 600 miles in harsh, icy conditions. Balto was the lead dog of the final sledge team, guided by musher Gunnar Kaasen, who braved blizzard-like conditions to deliver the serum to Nome.
The courage and endurance of Balto saved countless lives, and his accomplishments made him a national hero.

Nemo – German Shepherd
Another war hero dog, Nemo, the German Shepherd is known for his heroic actions during the Vietnam War. While serving as a military working dog for the US Air Force, Nemo was stationed at the Tan Son Nhut Air Base in 1966. During an attack on the base, Nemo and his handler Airman Robert Throneburg were ambushed by enemy forces. Despite being shot in the nose and losing an eye, Nemo fought bravely to protect his handler, which allowed Thornebug to call for backup and finally save both their lives.
